Do You Know The Difference Between Mold and Mildew? We Do!
When you have the creeping crud taking over your home, it’s hard to care whether it’s mold or mildew- you just want it gone. But mold and mildew have very different effects on your home and on you. Here are some facts showing what makes the two fungal growths so similar – and what makes them completely different.
Mold vs. Mildew: Which Is More Dangerous?
Mildew is mostly harmless, though there are a few breeds of mildew that can do damage to your home. While it’s more common than mold, it’s mostly an eyesore and unpleasant to the touch due to the powdery feeling. Mold, on the other hand, is much more invasive and can cause significant damage to vulnerable areas of your home. Mold tends to be fuzzy and more varied in color than mildew is. Signs that you might have mold include:
• Musty odors coming from secluded places in your home
• Dark stains on walls
• Previous leaks and water damage
• Fuzzy growths on organic matter, including walls, floors, and food
• Unexplained allergic reactions with no other allergen sources present
So How Do You Get Rid of Mold and Mildew?
Mold and mildew remediation can be difficult, but not impossible. While you are constantly inundated with free-floating mold spores, it’s possible to take preventative steps to ensure your home isn’t a hospitable environment for either parasitic growth to breed. Mitigate any leaks or water issues in your home, and clean up quickly after any floods. Adequately ventilate your home, and use a dehumidifier if needed to prevent growth in moist, humid areas. If you suspect a mold or mildew infestation, you can call in a professional to perform necessary testing and isolate the causes in your home. Lock Haven Hospital Fire
SERVPRO of Williamsport / Montoursville, as well as other Large Loss SERVPRO Teams began remediation of UPMC Lock Haven after a very large fire broke out on the campus. See some of the news report from The Express in Lock Haven below:
"UPMC Lock Haven Hospital on Cree Drive is closed and all patients have been evacuated after a stubborn fire was discovered at about 9 p.m. Thursday in the boiler room, emitting an acrid, toxic smoke into the air.
Hospital patients were immediately moved to a safe and secure area on the hospital campus, and later in the evening transferred to other facilities, according to UPMC Manager of Communications Tyler Wagner.
“There were 14 patients evacuated. Some were transferred to UPMC Williamsport and UPMC Muncy and some were discharged home,” Wagner said.
Maintenance crews from the hospital were sealing an old passageway underground between the hospital and boiler room on Thursday when the chemical sealant being used apparently had some sort of reaction and started a fire in the boiler room, Wagner explained, as he stood among a crowd of firefighters and hospital officials outside the emergency room entrance.
He said an investigation will further determine the exact cause.
Smoke was detected in the tunnel below the hospital at about 8 p.m. and at 9 p.m. the fire was detected in the same area, he said.
Citizens Hose Fire Chief Norm Wolfrom told The Express that firefighters encountered flames upon arrival.
The fire caused an acrid, toxic smoke, forcing firefighters to don airpacks, frequently rotate into the fire area and take breaks.
More units were called due to the intensity of the smoke, he said.
Ultimately, more than a dozen units from Clinton, Centre and Lycoming counties responded, along with more than 100 firefighters who took turns fighting the fire."

SERVPRO of Williamsport/Montoursville is an IICRC Certified firm and we follow strict IICRC guidelines. What's that mean? The Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) creates the standards for the restoration industry and provides training and certification to restoration companies.
IICRC Certified Firms Guidelines Are:
- Present accurate information to consumers and conduct business with honesty and integrity.
- Require a technician on all jobs who has been formally trained and passed all required tests.
- Require a continuing education program to keep technicians up-to-date on the latest changes in the industry.
- Maintain liability insurance to protect all parties in the event of an accident.
- Maintain a written complaint policy and agree to Better Business Bureau or similar arbitration to resolve disputes and accept the conclusions and recommendations of arbitration.
The IICRC has been the driving force in establishing the industry standards and reference guides for professional carpet cleaning, water damage restoration and mold remediation. These IICRC standards take years to develop and require the coordination of expert manufacturers, industry organizations, insurance professionals, training schools, contractors, and public health professionals.
Every five years, the standards are reviewed and updated. The water damage restoration field changes rapidly with advancements in technology and science, and therefore the standards must evolve to keep pace.
The Science of Drying
Most people have never heard of Psychrometry. Psychrometry is the science behind the determination of physical and thermodynamic properties of gas-vapor mixtures- in this case, air and water. While your initial reaction may be to grab a few towels to mop up the mess and place a fan or two around the damaged area, the technicians at SERVPRO of Williamsport/Montoursville are trained in the science of drying and are required to follow strict industry approved standards to help lower the chances of any secondary damages. Our technicians will:
~Use moisture meters to inspect all areas of the structure to detect all moisture to ensure all affected areas are remediated.
~Measure how much moisture is in any wet areas and monitor those areas throughout the process to ensure everything is drying properly.
~Use professional grade equipment to ensure proper drying in the quickest possible time.
SERVPRO of Williamsport/Montoursville has the knowledge, experience and equipment to ensure your structure dries properly which includes hardwood floor drying mats, equipment for tough-to-reach spaces inside walls, and much more. Our technicians also use state-of-the-art monitoring equipment and a proven scientific process to help speed the drying of your home or business.
Along with highly trained technicians and professional grade equipment, SERVPRO® has developed DryBook™: a proprietary tool that provides real-time documentation and updates on the drying process and helps ensure industry drying requirements are met. With DryBook™ Mobile, you know exactly where your property is in the drying process.

Why Call SERVPRO of Williamsport/Montoursville After a Fire Loss?
This home in Trout Run, PA sustained heavy smoke and soot damage after a fire loss.
You might think that you can do a good job at cleaning smoke and soot by yourself without any previous knowledge or training, but this can lead to you causing further damage to your property. The best thing to do is call the experienced SERVPRO professionals to remediate the damage.
After a fire, your property is left with lingering smoke that can be harmful to your health and property. The best thing to do is to clean smoke immediately. If you ignore it, the smoke will cause massive damage on your property which will require more money. If the smoke is not cleaned as soon as possible, the items that will be most affected are the drapes, carpets, upholstery and walls because they will become permanently discolored. Glass will become extremely etched and metals will tarnish which will require replacement.
One of the advantages of using the technicians of SERVPRO of Williamsport/Montoursville to clean the smoke and soot is that we have specialized tools which are crucial in eliminating smoke. These are tools include extractors, rotary scrubbers, and wet cleaning tools. Our technicians are highly trained and certified in all aspects of fire restoration.
Please call SERVPRO of Williamsport/Montoursville at (570) 546-3500 if you or someone you know experiences a fire loss.
Emergency Ready Program
SERVPRO will build and Emergency Ready Program suited just for you!
SERVPRO of Williamsport/Montoursville is a full service commercial restoration firm. We specialize in drying, cleaning and decontamination needs. Our approach uses a collaborative method to reduce operational risks, minimize downtime and save you money in order to get your business up and running after a disaster.
Consider the statistic that 50% of businesses who suffer a major disaster will never reopen. Of the businesses that reopened, most of them had a plan in place.
Several questions a business owner should consider:
Do your employees know your chain-of-command?
Do your teams know where your water shut-offs are?
Would your employees be able to direct first-responders?
The actions taken in the initial minutes of an emergency are critical. A prompt warning to employees to evacuate, shelter or lockdown can save lives. A call for help to public emergency services that provides full and accurate information will help the dispatcher send the right responders and equipment. An employee trained to administer first aid or perform CPR can be lifesaving. Action by employees with knowledge of building and process systems can help control a leak and minimize damage to the facility and the environment.
Thankfully, SERVPRO of Williamsport/Montoursville has an excellent system in place to help streamline your emergency response plan. With the Emergency Ready Program we will help you create a functional cloud based data set that can be used for things like staff emergency manuals, emergency contact information and building emergency critical information. Because disasters can happen when you are away, your team will have all of this data wherever you need it, with a push of a button.
To strategically align your building operations to make sure you have the help you need in an emergency, give us a call today. The consultation and Emergency Readiness Program is offered at no cost to your facility, give us a call at 570-546-3500.
